Background of the Study

Chronic pain is a prevalent issue among the elderly, significantly impacting their quality of life, physical functionality, and psychological well-being. Effective management of chronic pain in this population is essential to enhance daily functioning and overall health outcomes. Nurse-led interventions have emerged as a pivotal approach in managing chronic pain, encompassing strategies such as patient education, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and non-pharmacological pain management techniques.

In Nigeria, particularly in Kano State, the elderly population is increasing, leading to a higher demand for effective pain management strategies. However, there is limited research on the effectiveness of nurse-led interventions in this context. A study conducted in Kwara State demonstrated that a nurse-led pain management training program significantly improved nurses' knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding pain management, suggesting potential benefits for patient outcomes.

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of nurse-led interventions in managing chronic pain among elderly patients in Kano State, providing insights into their impact on pain intensity, functional ability, and quality of life.

Statement of the Problem

Chronic pain among the elderly in Kano State is a significant health concern, often leading to decreased mobility, depression, and reduced quality of life. Traditional pain management approaches may not adequately address the multifaceted nature of chronic pain in the elderly. Nurse-led interventions offer a comprehensive approach, yet their effectiveness in this setting remains underexplored. Understanding the impact of these interventions is crucial for developing effective pain management strategies tailored to the needs of the elderly population in Kano State.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the current practices of nurse-led interventions in managing chronic pain among elderly patients in Kano State.

2. To evaluate the effectiveness of these interventions on pain intensity, functional ability, and quality of life among elderly patients.

3. To identify barriers and facilitators influencing the implementation of nurse-led pain management interventions in this context.

Research Questions

1. What are the current nurse-led interventions utilized in managing chronic pain among elderly patients in Kano State?

2. How effective are these interventions in reducing pain intensity and improving functional ability and quality of life among elderly patients?

3. What factors influence the successful implementation of nurse-led pain management interventions in this setting?

Research Hypotheses

1. Nurse-led interventions significantly reduce pain intensity among elderly patients with chronic pain in Kano State.

2. These interventions lead to improvements in functional ability and quality of life among elderly patients.

3. Various factors, including nurse training and resource availability, influence the effectiveness of nurse-led pain management interventions.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on elderly patients aged 60 and above with chronic pain conditions receiving care in selected healthcare facilities in Kano State. It will evaluate nurse-led interventions currently in practice and their outcomes on patient health. Limitations may include variability in intervention implementation across different facilities, potential biases in self-reported data, and challenges in isolating the effects of nurse-led interventions from other concurrent treatments.

Definitions of Terms

• Chronic Pain: Persistent or recurrent pain lasting longer than three months, often resistant to medical treatments.

• Nurse-Led Interventions: Healthcare strategies initiated and managed by nurses aimed at preventing, managing, or treating health conditions.

• Functional Ability: The capacity to perform activities necessary for daily living.

• Quality of Life: The general well-being of individuals, encompassing physical, psychological, and social aspects.
